The Green Dragon Inn (location R2)[1] is an inn and tavern in the River Quarter of the Free City of Greyhawk.
Description
The Green Dragon Inn is a "two-story stone building" on Cargo Street only a few blocks from the Cargo Gate.[2][3]
All sorts of folk frequent the Green Dragon Inn, though the inn's reputation is one of a rough and tumble kind of place.[1][4][5] There is a great atmosphere, and there's always laughter and good food. It is known for having inexpensive prices and carousing.[5][4] Rhenee bargefolk frequent the tavern, as it is near the Dockway.[3] Even students from the local universities and other schools go to the Green Dragon from time to time.[1] "It's a dangerous place, but a friendly one, as long as no one harms the staff."[5]
Other than atmosphere and affordable provender, the Green Dragon is perhaps best known as a hub of information, rumors, and tales.[4] This is from not only the variety of patrons found here, but also the very affable and charismatic proprietor, Ricard Damaris who has "an ear for gossip and ... persuaive manner."[2] "In an earlier time, information was the sole purpose of the inn" and it has been thus for over three decades.[5]
The Green Dragon is one of the few places in the city open all day, every day.
The inn is named for the three green dragon servitors of its (secret) owner, Lord Robilar.[2]
History
After Robilar's success as an adventurer, he founded the Green Dragon, making it his base of operations. He asked Damaris to run the inn in about 560 CY, and Damaris jumped at the chance to retire. He had a long career as an adventurer, but lost his left pinky finger and wound up with a facial scar in the Battle of Emridy Meadows, after which he served Robilar as a retainer

Publishing history
According to Rob Kuntz, the Green Dragon Inn goes back to Gygax's original Greyhawk home campaign in 1972.[12][13]
In sourcebooks
There is a reference to the Green Dragon Inn in the Basic D&D "Blue Book" (1977) by Dr. J. Eric Holmes, though this is likely a Tolkein reference (a popular inn of the same name, in Bywater, frequented by Hobbits)[14] It is the name of the inn in Portown in the Sample Dungeon: "At the Green Dragon Inn, the players of the game gather their characters for an assault on the fabulous passages beneath the ruined Wizards' tower" (pg 41).
The first print reference to the Green Dragon Inn set specifically in the World of Greyhawk is found in the Official AD&D Coloring Album (1979).[15] "Here at the Green Dragon, a busy inn in a town on the shores of the Lake of Unknown Depths, a group of adventurers have met to plan a daring expedition in search of a fabulous treasure."[16][17]
The City of Greyhawk (1989) presented the Green Dragon in more detail, including details about its proprietor and other staff. The Adventure Begins (1998) also presented the Green Dragon Inn, though in slightly less detail.
The Green Dragon Inn appeared in Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk (2007), where it played an influential role in the adventure as a base of operations, networking, and downtime for the PCs.
In novels
Artifact of Evil (1986) included a brief reference to the Green Dragon. "...on a whim brought on by boredom, [Gord] casually entered the Green Dragon Inn. It was a place frequented by foreigners, mercenaries, tough adventurers, and others of less savory aspect."[18]
In other sources
The Green Dragon was mentioned briefly in Night Arrant, an anthology in the later Gord the Rogue novel series by Gygax (New Infinities Productions, 1986).[19]
