Arnford is a town in western Nyrond on the western side of the Duntide River.[1]
History
Following the Greyhawk Wars the local ruler of Beetu, Count Romadnen Bereman, was one of the dominant local rulers in the western lands of Nyrond, along with the ruler of Woodwych. Bandits and highwaymen were a real hazard in the area. The Count was seen as a toadying weakling, buying favor with the king by raising and paying taxes while ignoring the people's suffering. This alienated most people who were surly and inhospitable as a result, avoiding strangers as well as despising the Court and King Archbold III. They were downtrodden and despairing, adopting a strategy of trying to conceal anything they owned or earned from the reluctant tax collecting militia. Locals had become experts in dishonesty by omission or lies, with thieves and rogues began to flourish.[2]
A militia force of 150 is always present, taxing fish catches at market or even on the river banks as brought in. Arnford's once thriving markets were almost abandoned, merchants and livestock farmers no longer traveled there, and the cloth rolls were closed, due to almost half their goods or earnings being taken in taxes. By spring 585 CY, 15% of Arnford's people quietly left. The lands around contained abandoned farmsteads, left by tenant farmers unable to afford ruinous rents and tithes. Some are taken over as bases for desperate men resorting to earning a living by banditry.[1]
Geography
Arnford is located on the Duntide River between Swan Bore and Callistor.
Travel
Arnford was also a ferry town allowing such to cross the river either way.[1] The Duntide River was a major trade and transport route within Nyrond.
People
Population
In spring 585 CY the population was approximately 3,200, down by about 15% due to people quietly leaving for Urnst or even the Gnatmarsh.[1]. By 591 CY it had grown to 3,900.[3]
Demographics
The races of Nyrond can all be expected to be found here, being humans (with Oeridian and Suel ethnic background), Olve (mainly sylvan with a small high elf presence), Halfling (stout), Dwarf, Gnome, half-elf and half-orc.[3]
Nyrond generally is lawful neutral in alignment, with lawful good, neutral good, chaotic good, and neutral also prevalent.[3]
Religion
The common religions of Nyrond can be expected to be followed here, being Heironeous (the official state religion), Beory, Rao, Pelor, Zilchus, Norebo, Pholtus, Ralishaz, Boccob, Delleb, Celestian.[4]
Following the Greyhawk Wars superstitions and the worship of evil gods (including Hextor and Incabulos) began to grow as a sign of the despair of the common folk.[5]
Languages
The common languages of Nyrond can be expected to be spoken here, being Common, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Elven, and Halfling.[6]
Government
Arnford is located within the Kingdom of Nyrond.
In Spring 585 CY the Count based in Beetu administered the lands south to the Gnatmarsh, and north along the Duntide River to Arnford.[2]
Following the reorganization of provincial administration under King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY Arnford was part of the County of Brackenmoor.[7][8]
Economy
Prior to the Greyhawk Wars and the financial problems that followed due to high taxes, Arnford had thriving markets attracting merchants and farmers and imported livestock from the southern lands for sale to settlements to the west including the Celadon Forest. The rich Arnford rolls produced cloths dyed with plant extracts from the Celadon Forest. This trade and production ceased due to ruinous taxes after the Wars. However, the fishing industry continued harvesting fish and producing barrels of salted fish [1]
Military
In Spring 585 CY 150 militia were stationed in Arnford, being mainly used for tax collecting.[1]
