Battle of Grabford
The Battle of Grabford was a turning point of the Great Northern Crusade, in 588 CY.
Lead up to the battle
After the Great War
The Treaty of Greyhawk ended the Greyhawk Wars, and imposed a truce on Furyondy (and other nations). Belvor IV chafed under the pact, wanting to fight back against the Empire of Iuz. Though Furyondan armies couldn't strike directly against Iuz, Furyondy was able to act indirectly. Belvor supported the search for the Crook of Rao and the subsequent Flight of Fiends it wrought in 586 CY.[1]
With Iuz left in such a lurch from the Flight, Belvor couldn't help but see it as an opportunity. The servitors and conscripts of Iuz were largely bolstered by the demons of the Empire. Without them, Iuz was largely weak and unable to acti militarily. Thus, Belvor struck out a blow against Iuz.[1]
Great Northern Crusade
While the Treaty established a border between the Empire and Furyondy, there were lands which were still occupied by Iuz, notably the region surrounding Crockport and Grabford, along the southern shores of Whyestil Lake. This was the northern border of Furyondy.
In direct violation of the Treaty, King Belvor IV began the Great Northern Crusade to reclaim the lands taken by Iuz in the Great War[2][3]
Events of the battle
The Battle of Grabford was a decisive victory for Furyondy. In 588 CY. they were able to maneuver between the Horned Lands occupied by Iuz (to the northeast) and Crockport (to the southwest), cutting off the forces of Iuz and encircling the Iuzian army pressed up against the shores of Whyestil Lake, and isolating them at Grabford without reinforcements or resupply. The resulting siege brought the Iuzian force to their knees in Grabford. The city "was the site of uncontrolled chaos and slaughter of the occupying forces. Crockport had been the goal of the great Northern Crusade. Many fell victim to emotion in its recapture, and few good men remember the event with any degree of pride."[1]
Outcome and aftermath
"Once the Pact of Greyhawk was discarded by Furyondy and Veluna in 586 CY, other nations also disregarded it and began claiming or reclaiming territory they desired."[4][5]
The attack against Iuz continued, and he was pushed back further and further. In 589 CY, Belvor instituted a "'permanent and unalterable state of war' between Furyondy and the Empire"[1] which continued into the 590s CY and after.[1]
