General information
Region:Bandit Kingdoms

The Earldom of the Tangles is a minor independent state within the Bandit Kingdoms. It consists of the entire forest known as the Tangles, the western portion of the Rift Barrens, as well as the plains bordering the Shield Lands and Warfields.

History

The Earldom was formed by a group of adventurers devoted to Olidammara. These were a jovial people, but were continually tested by hobgoblin raids. The Earldom suffered greviously during the Greyhawk Wars during which the Earldom was fully occupied by the forces of Iuz. Afterward, only the most inaccessible part of the Tangles forest remained in the hands of the lands original rulers.

People

Only a few hundred men and half-elves remain of the original inhabitants, with a smattering of other races who also remain opposed to Iuz, such as elves and halflings.

Religion

The forces of Iuz worship their god, while the original inhabitants remain faithful to Olidammara and, to a degree, Trithereon. This devotion to The Summoner is primarily due to the fact that, after 585 CY, the rebel forces receive considerable magical aid from clerics of Trithereon from Furyondy.

Languages

Several languages are frequently spoken in the Earldom—Common, Orcish, Goblin and Halfling.

Government

After the Greyhawk Wars (585+ CY) Iuz rules the Earldom by means of his puppet, Earl Aundurach, an evil human and cleric of Iuz. Aundurach was made a member of the Lesser Boneheart and proved to be a harsh and ineffective ruler. The city of Hallorn is the old capital and still serves as the seat of government for Aundurach.

Earl Aundurach has a magical scepter, which he likes to flamboyantly display. This scepter is said to be made from the bones of Reynard, the Tangles' bandit chief who was captured and slain in 589 CY.

Aundurach's charge is to rule and control all activities in the northwest portion of the Bandit Lands, though he has failed in accomplishing this.

Economy

Military

The occupying forces of Iuz comprise the military for the Earldom, while human, elven and half-elven forces comprise the rebel forces within the Tangles' deep forest.

Notes

The city of Hallorn was briefly turned into a city of undead and zombies, thanks to Iuz' former commander, an insane priest, and his demonic allies. After the death of this priest and the Flight of Fiends, the town returned to a more normal demeanor, though one with a much more evil leaning.
