Enchiridion of the Fiend-Sage is a series of eight articles published in the Living Greyhawk Journal, detailing various creatures native or unique to the Greyhawk setting.
Description
An enchiridion (pronounced /en-ˌkī-ˈri-dē-ən/) is a manual or handbook; a book containing essential information on a subject.
The Enchiridion series is written in the voice of the Fiend-Sage of Rel Astra, as written reports to Drax. The articles took a close look at individual creatures who were considered some of the most iconic in the World of Greyhawk.
Each article included both an in-character letter from the Fiend-Sage and mechanical rules (a monster stat block) for each creature. The letters frequently mentioned torture and conducting violent, involuntary research by the Fiend-Sage, inflicted on subjects who frequently died as a result.
Publication History
The first five articles were published in the first five Living Greyhawk Journals, when it was still a stand-alone magazine (2000-2001). The final three installments were contained in the Living Greyhawk Journal issues which were included inside Dragon and Dungeon/Polyhedron.
In 2024, the authors of the Enchiridion article in Living Greyhawk Journal #24 (2004), Stuart Kerrigan and Paul Looby, self-published a commercial product on the DMs' Guild, Knights of Doom - A Greyhawk Journal, in the same style as these articles ostensibly written in-character by the Fiend-Sage. Kerrigan also did a solo product centered on the Fiend-Sage itself, The Fiend-Sage of Rel Astra - A Greyhawk Journal. However, these are apocryphal and not official sources.
