Grimalkinsham, or Grimalkin, was a village in the Gnatmarsh.
Description
History
The Gord the Rogue novel of short stories Night Arrant featured A Revel in Rel Mord, set in Nyrond and King Archbold III in (presumably) the 580s CY. This novel was after Gary Gygax's departure from TSR, and therefore cannot be regarded as officially published content. However, it does provide some details from Gygax's version of Greyhawk or the Flanaess.
The story featured Gord and Chert traveling to the Gnatmarsh as a quest under geas in punishment to retrieve what proved later to be the pommel-stone of the Sword of Dunstan.
People
The population of Grimalkinsham are human, without mention of other races.
The Gnatmarsh was said to feature catoblepas. It featured trolls, witches, green hags, shellycoats, night hags and annis.
Geography
Grimalkinsham was a village in the center of a scrubby woodland, accessed by a winding causeway known to locals. It consisted of 40 to 50 huts and hovels sprawled around a score of more or more substantial buildings. Half the larger structures were taverns, gaming houses and inns (of which there were 3), and it did a brisk business with rogues and outlaws.
Totems and ringed stone pillars encircled the community, to keep certain forces or monsters away.
Notable Locations
The smallest of the 3 inns was able to accommodate at least 16 beds, with stabling. All of the staff at that inn were men.
An establishment called "Rosey's" was serviced by the proprietress and her staff of at least 18, most or all of whom proved to be witches, green hags, night hags, shellycoats, and annis, disguised by illusion or magic as attractive human females. These included Quodilde, a powerful witch of the Gnatmarsh whose family appeared to have used Grimalkinsham as their lair going back to at least her grandmother and covering generations in human lifespans. Quodilde was revealed to have been holding the pommel-stone of the Sword of Dunstan, stolen by her grandmother from King Dunstan II generations prior.
