Karn Serrand is in charge (in 585 CY) of the citadel at Goldbolt, a protective garrison near Chathold, to the western edge of the Great Kingdom just south of the Almorian Protectorate.
Description
Appearance
Karn is exactly six feet tall, and has light brown hair, which is naturally streaked with more honey colored highlights, and has amber-tinted light-brown eyes.[1]
Personality
Serrand is steadfast and principled, as well as being rather proud,[1] but he is not aggressive. He will destroy evil if it threatens him or anyone he has taken under his protection, but he prefers to let evil come to him. He is also "reasonably worldly-wise"[2], though his patience is tested by anything chaotic evil.[2]
Religion
Karn Serrand is a paladin of Rao, and that informs his philosophy of patience. He knows that Rao is pleased with the arrival of Hierranea.[2] He has, for that reason, started to believe Hierranea's prophesy that the lands west of Goldbolt will vanish under Relmor Bay.
Abilities
Str 17, Wis 18, Cha 18[1]
Serrand has the typical abilites of a twelfth level paladin.[1]
Home
Karn Serrand is in charge of maintaining the citadel of Goldbolt, which is on the border of what was once Almor, and is charged by Prince Carwend with holding the line against the advances of Duke Szeffrin. To that purpose he maintains a garrison of nearly a thousand troops, which he is only able to feed because of supplies given by Carwend, and the pearls that Hierranea brought with her. Farmers began to trickle back to the area in early 585 CY, and that fall marked the first harvest in the area since the Greyhawk Wars.[2]
Equipment and possessions
Serrand owns a suit of plate mail +4.[1]
Relationships
Enemies
Karn Serrand has two main enemies, The first is Ferrenan (a vampire), and the second, more pressing enemy is Duke Szeffrin. One of his greatest consternations is that he is forced to hold off on attacking Blacksplinter because it is under Prince Carwend's protection and he needs the supplies from Carwend. He maintains though, that Ferrenan is "a monster, a sadist, and not even human!"[2] Complicating that is an enemy-of-my-enemy situation, as Szeffrin poses a threat to both of them and the entire area with his army of fiends.[2]
Allies and minions
Karn Serrand has a decent amount of respect for Prince Carwend, even if he disagrees with his tolerance of Ferrenan, which is, in part, why that tolerance upsets him so much. He grudgingly has to admit, however, that Carwend is doing his best to maintain the balance in the area, and doing a pretty good job of it.[2]
Hierranea is Serrand's other main ally. Despite his initial reservation about her being a storm giant, he has come to rely on her, and is grateful for both the supplies she brought with her and the odd morale boost that having her around has brought to him and his men.[2]
