The Stone Road is a road running along the northern border between the County of Urnst and the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Description

The Stone Road is great highway over one hundred miles forming the border of the Nyrond with the County of Urnst. The road's name is based on the up to 4 feet high dry stone walls that line its full length. Both sides of the border are important agricultural land which is stony and used for livestock farming, in particular sheep and goats. The grazing fields are usually marked by the same dry stone walls. Soldiers of the Duchy of Urnst patrol the entire border, with only a handful of small watch-posts on the Nyrond side. These run as far north as the end of the road at Starkwall, beyond which Nyrond's border continues on to the Nutherwood along the eastern banks of the Artonsamay River. In 585 CY about 1,600 royal soldiers patrolled the river border with the previous Bandit Kingdoms occupied by Iuz. However, hobgoblin soldiers, marauding bandits, and a rare fiend would cross over into Nyrond at times, but not on an organized basis. The attacks still caused fatalities and drove away many farmers the Artonsamay basin's fertile valleys and dales, and the bandits and hobgoblins sought booty and (in the hobgoblins' case) slaves for Iuz.[1]

By 591 CY Urnst's eastern border, along the Stone Road and Franz River was no longer heavily garrisoned against the threat of invasion from Nyrond, and instead the old keeps and castles there were used again to keep track of the hordes of refugees seeking to move west.[2]
