Durinken is the high priest of Rao and the Canon of Rel Mord[1], in the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Description

Durinken is a slim 6' 2" charismatic figure, bowed at times by anxiety but genial when relaxed. He is Lawful Good.[2] and his frank honesty earned him the respect of his priesthood who worked hard amongst all sections of society to mediate and arbitrate disputes.[1] In Spring 585 CY he was 49 years old.[2]

History

By Spring 585 CY Durinken could see the failings of Archbold III and that he could not continue as king, although he would not act against him. He saw it as the main duty of the priesthood of Rao to mediate disputes in Nyrond, which was suffering division and dissent, and to ensure Lynwerd could assume the throne in due course. He further felt the church's duty was to support local rulers and landowners who had the support of their people and to provide succor to the poor and suffering throughout the land. All but the most precious icons of the church were sold to provide support, if necessary. The priesthood was very loyal to Durinken.[2]

Durinken gave an ultimatum to Archbold, demanding that by the end of 585 CY the people of Nyrond were fed and cared for with the end of starvation and tax rioting. If that required reduction of taxes and insufficient funds for the army, then this was the price, because without the people there was no Nyrond to defend. While Durinken did not wish to see Nyrond undefended, he did not see danger of invasion which would require the huge army Archbold continued to maintain. He considered it senseless, and it angered him. He prioritized the welfare of the people over defense at that time.[1]

Speaking as high priest of Rao, Durinken announced portents in spring that the crop of 591 would be the largest in decades.[3]

Abilities

Int 16, Wis 18, Cha 15.[2]

Equipment and possessions

Durinken has a footman's mace +2, +5 versus evil creatures (capable of paralyzing evil beings). He has had access to various other magical items of the church of Rao in Nyrond.[2]

In Living Greyhawk

Durinken featured in the Nyrond regional campaign for Living Greyhawk.

By 591 CY Durinken had been high priest for close to 20 years. He was a close adviser and friend to Lynwerd, played a part in stopping Sewarndt's first coup in 586 CY, helping ensure Lynwerd took power. Durinken consulted regularly with the Grey Seer. He hired adventurers in 591 CY to look for a Raoan relic in the Flinty Hills.[4]

After Sewarndt staged his successful coup against Lynwerd at the end of 594 CY, he blackmailed Durinken to not overtly assist Lynwerd by threatening hostages. Adventurers assisted in Durinken travelling to Barren Keep to aid Queen Xenia Sallavarian give birth to Princess Archarzi, having previously treated while she was in a coma for years.[5]
