The Grey Seer is a long time magical adviser to the monarchs of the Kingdom of Nyrond.
Description
Appearance
The Grey Seer's age is unknown, but appears at least 80. He is hunched and stooped, with lined and wrinkled skin and has thick grey hair in a crew-cut. Despite his apparent age and hunched posture, he can move and react swiftly.[1]
Personality and alignment
He appears to be a old doddery fool or wily soothsayer uttering riddles. However, he is sharp as a razor, always ready with a retort to any implied criticism or wisecrack. Only he knows what he truly thinks of the future of Nyrond. He is a follower of Boccob[2], and of Neutral alignment.[1]
History
In Spring 585 CY the Grey Seer had been an adviser to Nyrond's kings for over 60 years. Since Archmage Ghiselinn had recently left the service of King Archbold III, he was his key adviser. He was constantly hovering, poring over runes, magical mirrors, and similar.[1]
He was able to advise Archbold that Bloodcrystal blocks all but the most powerful magical scrying, as well as fire, electrical attacks and transmute rock to mud.[3]
By 591 CY he was one of several persons suspected of possibly being the Shadow-Sage.[4]
Abilities
In Spring 585 CY he was a 17th level specialist diviner mage (first edition), with Int 18, Wis 17 and 33 hp. [1]

Equipment and possessions
In Spring 585 CY he wore grey robes of the archmagi, ring of protection +4, and a ring which blocks all divination spells directed at him save commune. He owns many divination magic items, including at least 2 unusual crystal balls, a wand of enemy detection, and a ring of x-ray vision. He possesses a pack of unique magical cards able to cast an augury spell 3 time a day as to events over the next 7-26 days.[1]
Relationships
By Spring 585 CY he would not lie to the king, but could be evasive often by using indecipherable riddles to cloud. Many of the court feared or disliked him. He has no friends, and few feel at ease in his presence.[1] He was rumored to be a member of the Sagacious Society.[5]
His familiar is an owl named Buberin, that appears as old as him. It rarely leaves his shoulder, where it sleeps.[1]
In Living Greyhawk
The Grey Seer was a leading protagonist in the Nyrond region during the Living Greyhawk campaign. He founded the Grey Watch, a network of spies and agents, shortly after Lady Xenia Sallavarian fell into a coma in 589 CY. He supported King Lynwerd during the coup by Prince Sewarndt, and in regaining the throne in 595 CY.
Creative origins
The Grey Seer seems based on mythic and literary figures such as Merlin and Gandalf.
