The Sagacious Society is an eltist group operating in Nyrond.
History
The Society is an elitist group formally formed after the Greyhawk Wars by a group or scholars, sages, and some mages who previously had known each other as colleagues. The Society's goal is the preservation of Nyrond as a bastion of learning, culture and scholarship, which is threatened by the threats of Iuz, humanoids (of the Bone March), Stonefist, and the destruction of Almor. The members of the Society chose to stay and preserve Nyrond rather than flee west as many of their colleagues did during the Wars. It supported Lynwerd replacing Archbold III as King of Nyrond following the Wars, to ensure a strong and effective monarch.[1]
Activities
The Society is in constant communication with sages and powerful mages in other realms seeking information and resources to assist Nyrond. Members must give a significant part of their resources, such as personal wealth and magical items, to bolster weaknesses in Nyrond's defenses. In the years immediately after the Wars this was seen to be the Flinty Hills, so the Society liaised with the gnomes in that regard to know their needs. Members have access to substantial arcane and secret lore, and recruit adventurers and mercenaries for expeditions into the Rakers, Flinty Hills, and Griff Mountains, eastern Abbor-Alz and elsewhere seeking lost treasures and magic. Members are widespread and communicate through crystal balls and similar magic. [1]
Relationships
The Society is strongly opposed to the Valorous League of Blindness.[1]
Many members of the Society are followers of Boccob.[2]
Some well-informed members of the Society have good relations with Duke Arnon Orberend of Hendrenn Halgood, providing information to assist in expeditions to the Yatils.[3] Some members are friends with Gelleflair Entrell of the Entrell Estates.[4]
The Royal University of Rel Mord is home to many members of the Society.[5]
Recognition
Most members keep their involvement in the Society Secret, and the Society operates in secret.[1]
Headquarters
The Society has no known headquarters with members throughout Nyrond, but many members are located in Rel Mord.
Prominent Members
High Priest Palindren of Zilchus is one of the few publicly known members. The Grey Seer is suggested by some to be a member, but this is believed to be unlikely.[1]
In the Living Greyhawk Campaign
The Sagacious Society featured in the Living Greyhawk campaign in the Nyrond player-region. It was further detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" and "Nyrond Metagaming Organizations" fan-created source-books.
