Durinken is the High Priest of Rao, also referred to as the Canon of Rel Mord[1], in the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Description

In Spring 585 CY he was a slim 6' 2" charismatic figure, bowed at times by anxiety but genial when relaxed. He is of Lawful Good alignment.[2] His frank honesty earned him the respect of his priesthood, who worked hard amongst the common people and all sections of society to mediate and arbitrate disputes.[1]

History

By Spring 585 CY Durinken could see the failings of Archbold III as king and that he could not continue, although he would not act against him. He saw the main duty of the priesthood of Rao to mediate disputes in Nyrond, which was suffering division and dissent, and ensure Lynwerd could assume the throne in due course. The church was also to support local rulers and landowners who had the support of their people, and to provide succor to the poor and suffering throughout the land. All but the most precious icons of the church were to be sold to provide support, if necessary. The priesthood were very loyal to Durinken.[2]

At that time Durinken put what amounted to an ultimatum to Archbold, demanding that by the end of 585 CY the people of Nyrond were fed and cared for with the end of starvation and tax rioting. If that required reduction of taxes and insufficient funds for the army, then this was the price - without the people there was no Nyrond to defend. While Durinken did not wish to see Nyrond undefended, he did not see a serious danger of invasion requiring the huge army Archbold continued to maintain which angered him and he considered senseless. He prioritized the welfare of the people over defense at that time.[1]

In Spring 591 CY Durinken as High Priest of Rao announced portents that the year's crop would be the largest in decades.[3]

Abilities

In Spring 585 CY he was a 15th level priest, with Int 16, Wis 18, Cha 15 and 62 hp.[2]

Equipment and possessions

In Spring 585 CY he possessed a footman's mace +2, +5 versus evil creatures (capable of paralyzing evil beings). He also had access to various other magical items of the church of Rao in Nyrond. [2]

In Living Greyhawk

Durinken featured during the Nyrond region campaign for Living Greyhawk.

He was indicated by 591 CY to have been High Priest for close to 20 years, to be a close adviser and friend to Lynwerd, played a part in stopping Sewarndt's first coup in 586 CY and ensuring Lynwerd took power, and consulted regularly with the Grey Seer. He hired adventurers in 591 CY to look for a Raoan relic in the Flinty Hills.[4]

After Sewarndt staged his successful coup against Lynwerd at the end of 594 CY, he blackmailed Durinken to not overtly assist Lynwerd by threatening hostages. Adventurers assisted in Durinken travelling to Barren Keep to aid Queen Xenia Sallavarian give birth to Princess Archarzi, having previously treated while she was in a coma for years.[5]
