Region:Sea Baronies

Fairisle is one of the islands of the Sea Baronies which is farthest west and closest to the coast of the former Great Kingdom. The capital of the island is Port Elder.

Geography

The island is south and ever so slightly to the west of Asperdi Isle, and to the north of Leastisle. It's known for its low, rolling, fertile hills and the white sand beaches along the northwestern coast. The northeastern part of the island is more scrub and woodland, home to giant apes, who are not known to be aggressive, and southern tip of the island is known as Cape Rarn, and contains a handful of old Suloise ruins, which most of the islanders avoid.[1]

People

The people of the island are known to be much more relaxed and easier going than those on the other islands, partly due to their baron's own lax attitude due to his youth.

Resources

The islanders hunt the giant apes for their fur, using blow guns and nets as their main weapons to avoid damaging said fur[1]. The island is also known for its giant clams harvested along the coast [2] the various herbs and spices that grow in the wooded areas, which tend to be sought by alchemists and herbalists [3].

Rumors & legends

There are numerous legends surrounding the ruins at the tip of Cape Rarn, linking them to the Ilse of Serpents and the terrors found there, which cause most islanders to avoid them.

Defenses

Baron Pamdarn is quite young, but does take the islands defense seriously, particularly due to their proximity to Leastisle and the pirates operating from there, and to that end, maintains a fleet consisting of three galleons and ten coasters that is always on alert. [1]

In the Living Greyhawk campaign (2000-2008) the Sea Baronies region was assigned to players in Italy.[4] The vast majority of content is in Italian, most significantly all adventures were in Italian. Therefore, the following material is translated from the original sources.[5][6]

Description

As would be expected, Fairisle is named for its pastoral beauty. It has "fertile and rolling hills" and "white sandy beaches" (on the northwest coast).

History

Geography

The entire length of the island has a hill ridge running down the middle of it. The span is entirely forested, with the northern terminus of the ridge stretching between Red Port (Porto Rosso) and Black Pearl (Perla Nera) being heavily forested. The regions within 8 miles or so of the coast is flatter grasslands.

At the center of Fairisle is a lake in the caldera of a long-dead volcano. Jeroh is a minig community present on the lakeshore.

The mountains surrounding the caldera lake top out just over a half mile high. The mountains and hills of the region are where the largest portion of the island's dwarves and gnomes live.

There is a barrier island just off the east coast from Black Pearl (Perlanera). It is about 8 miles offshore, and is approximately 18 miles long and 2 miles wide.

There are seven notable lighthouses and watchtowers on the shores, spaced around the entire island. The contruction of these was the project of the Irat family, and improved the navigation of the island, making it safer and easier than ever before.

Settlements

Among the settlements of Fairisle are a variety of other small towns and villages.

Northern
  • Blackpearl (pop. 2,500)—Lord Ut'hear. region is known for clam harvesting, gathering its namesake precious gems; population is mostly indigenous Flan.
  • Red Port (pop. 3,500)—where wild apes are hunted, and their pelts tanned.
Central
  • Port Elder
  • Jeroth (pop. 1,500)—Lord Huwit Jeroh. Mining village in the central hills and mountains
  • Kityr-
Cape Rarn
  • Irat (pop. 1,500)—Urek Irat (baron's cousin).
  • Rovine
  • Fort Rarn—Urek Irat, fort commander, 100 soldiers for southern defense of island.

People

"The inhabitants of Fairisle are the classic result of the melting pot of races that have succeeded one another in being present on the island; Almost all the most common races existing in the world are represented there. Humans are mainly of mixed race but can be found in inhabited centers or in the countryside... there are therefore communities of Flan (the ancient natives) and Oeridians...

The elves present on the island are descendants of wood elves present on the island since the dawn of time, as well as sea elves and high elves, who came here through subsequent migrations, and settled here because they were struck by the natural beauty of the island.

The dwarves and gnomes arrived here in the wake of the first baron of the island because they were in charge of building the infrastructures necessary for the development of the island itself; these small communities remained once the small metal mines near the extinct volcano were discovered."[5][6]

Notable individuals

  • Baron Pamdarn—baron of Fairisle. 22 years old; has a distinct dislike for slavery.
  • Admiral Yendrenn Harquil the Seawolf—admiral of the Pamdarn fleet

Religion

"The ubiquitous seafaring activity finds it necessary to pay its respect to Procan, though wealthy merchants often turn more to Osprem or Xerbo. Pelor and Berei are revered primarily in the Flan community of Blackpearl.

In the city of Port Elder it is not difficult to come across the followers of Norebo, in the taverns to challenge fate with dice, or in the House of the Great Gambit, a palace owned by a man who always shows himself in mask, a place where people gamble and also bet large sums of money.

Openly evil cults do not have "overt" worshippers, although they surely gather in some dark corner of the city to organize their misdeeds, in line with the belief of their deity."[5][6]

Government

Heraldry

The primary heraldry used by the barons of the Dominion is the sea serpent. However, Yendrenn Harquil is noted for his use of a similar banner, but with a seawolf instead of the serpent.

Economy

Resources

The hunting and pelt trade of great apes (as mentioned above) is what gives Red Port (Porto Rosso) its name. It refers to the substances used to tan and beautify the pelts.
